Why Oman and Pakistan Are Shaping Iran-U.S. Diplomacy

A quieter but significant story is emerging behind the Iran-U.S. tensions: the growing role of middle-power mediators.

While world attention remains fixed on Washington and Tehran, Muscat and Islamabad may be where the real diplomacy is unfolding.

Oman has long served as a discreet broker in Middle East crises, while Pakistan’s recent diplomatic engagement suggests a parallel mediation channel could be taking shape. Reports of Iranian diplomatic movements between Pakistan, Oman and Moscow have only intensified speculation.

Experts say this “Muscat-Islamabad channel” reflects a broader shift in global diplomacy, where traditional powers are increasingly relying on regional intermediaries.

For Pakistan, this carries strategic significance:

  • It elevates foreign policy relevance
  • Strengthens Islamabad’s image beyond South Asia
  • Could create leverage in wider regional diplomacy

Some analysts even argue these talks could mark the beginning of Pakistan repositioning itself not merely as a security state, but as a diplomatic actor.

Key Question:
Can middle powers broker what superpowers cannot?
